The Population Of Endangered Asiatic Lions Rose From 523 In 2015 To 600 In 2018 in the Gir National Park in Gujarat. Park in But Many as 23 lions died in September. It Hais now been been found that the lions face a serious threat from a disease outbreak caused by highly contagious canine distember virus (CDV) Making their shift imperative.

1.What Is CVD?


Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) is a viral disease that infects a wide variety of animal families, including domestic and wild species of dogs, Big cat ,and primates. The virus infects the gastrointestinal, respiratory and central nervous systems.

2.Positive for CDV

The indian council of medical research (ICMR) Confirmed that five of the lions died from a contagious infections caused by canine distemper virus(CDV),Samples from 21 sick lions turned positive.

3.Relocation is essential

The deaths bring to focus on the warning given in 2011 by the centre for animal Disease Research And Diagnosis (CODRAD), Bengaluru, and indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Uttarakhand , about the presence of highly contagious peste despetits ruminants virus

Scientist have pointed out that stray dogs in and around the Gir forest could have spread the disease to the Lions. Other species such as jungle cat, palm civet cat, jackal and red panda may be potent sources too. The virus spread through air and through contact with infected bodly fluids. it can also be spread from food and water contaminated with disease these fluids. The virus also spreads if an animal eats the meat of an infected animal. in the past, it wiped out 30% of the total population of lions in serengeti National Park in East Africa.
